Marketing 101

If there is any one theme, from High School English, that may help you cope with your marketing woes, it could be this: Appearances can be deceiving. Whether we are talking about video games, or Vespa scooters, quick assumptions about your target market may leave you scratching your head.

Businessweek.com reveals two cases of two unlikely demographics that were not accounted for. Surprisingly, they have become an important part of the target market for two different products. In contrast to the norm, Attack of the Gaming Grannies, and the story of Vespa riding Boomers, shows the example of discovering the omitted demographic.

Flexibility often develops as firms grow large enough to afford making some mistakes. Being lean and fragile is inherent to small businesses where failing to consider an important demographic, when defining target market, is a mistake that may devastate the company.
